Clariant’s EnviCat® Green series catalyst chosen for major green ammonia project in China
Clariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemical company, today announced that a deoxygenation catalyst from its EnviCat Green series was selected for a major green ammonia project in China. The catalyst will be used to remove trace oxygen from green hydrogen produced at the facility, before conversion into green ammonia. Carbon-free production of ammonia greatly reduces the environmental impact of this valuable base chemical needed for vital applications, such as fertilizer production. Green ammonia is also expected to play a key role in the world’s energy transition, offering versatile applications in transportation, power, and hydrogen supply.

Clariant Catalysts and KBR expand their strategic collaboration to boost low-carbon ammonia
Clariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemicals company, today announced the expansion of its strategic cooperation with KBR in the field of ammonia production. Ammonia plays a vital role in today´s food production, and it will become even more important as a clean energy source in the future. The partners will continue collaborating on traditional ammonia projects while significantly increasing their focus on low-carbon and carbon-free “green ammonia” applications. The solutions will combine Clariant’s outstanding AmoMax ammonia synthesis catalysts with KBR’s K-GreeN® ammonia technologies to maximize the economics and energy efficiency of ammonia production. KBR is a leading ammonia process provider with over 75 years of experience in licensing and designing more than 250 ammonia plants worldwide. Clariant provides catalysts best suited for the optimum performance of KBR-licensed ammonia plants.

Clariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemical company, today announced that its MegaZonE technology is delivering excellent performance on the methanol plant of CNOOC’s China Blue Chemical Ltd. The innovative system uses several layers of methanol catalysts with different activity levels to optimize heat management and overall catalyst performance. MegaZonE was installed at CNOOC’s methanol production plant in Hainan, China, in April 2021, and has been operating optimally for more than 36 months now. A joint venture with the KB Group, the CNOOC plant produces 600 KTA methanol from natural gas using Air Liquide’s Lurgi process and Clariant’s MegaMax® catalysts.
During a visit to strategic customer Wanhua Chemical Group, Clariant CEO Conrad Keijzer and his leadership team held talks on expanding business relations. “We see great opportunities to further develop our successful cooperation with Wanhua”, he said. Clariant and Wanhua had signed a strategic cooperation agreement in May 2022.

Presented by the Catalysis Society of China, and sponsored by Clariant, the NCC Achievement Award recognizes an individual for outstanding accomplishments in catalysis research in China. The recipient, Prof. Bao, is a highly respected catalyst expert, with extensive experience in clean and efficient energy conversion. The award was extended to Prof. Bao by Weixing Gu, Clariant’s Head of Catalyst R&D China, during the opening ceremony of the conference on July 22 in Kunming, China.
