The ignition for Clariant’s sustainability passion

Demand for Exolit OP flame retardants continues to grow as manufacturers recognize the value they bring to a circular economy for plastics. (Photo: Clariant)An unfailing belief in the need to develop environmentally friendly fire protection for plastics started life as a small idea among a selected group of people within the mighty Hoechst AG. “I’d landed my dream job and our team began asking very forward looking questions for the 1990s, investigating how to develop safer and more environmentally friendly ways to lessen the fire risk posed by electrical and electronic goods and protect their plastic parts from igniting. With experience in phosphorus chemistry we believed we had the experience and knowledge to push these boundaries,” says Martin Sicken, Head of Innovation Flame Retardants.

Tests confirm new long-lasting surface coating for public spaces proven to kill COVID-19

A new durable anti-viral surface treatment from AFFIX labs has been scientifically proven to last for months on surfaces such as restaurant tables, school furniture and other public spaces while effectively killing the COVID-19 pathogen upon contact. (Photo: Pixabay)Good news for the development of sustainable compostable products. Clariant’s bio-based processing & dispersing additives for biopolymers used in plastics– Licocare® RBW Vita range, Licolub® FA 1 and Licowax® C – have been awarded the “OK compost INDUSTRIAL” certificate. Awarding test and certification body, TÜV Austria Cert GmbH, also granted toLicocare RBW 102 Vita the “OK biodegradable SOIL” label, which is a key attribute for agricultural applications.

Clariant ColorWorks applies IR-detectable black technology to make other dark colors more recyclable

Clariant ColorWorks applies IR-detectable black technology to make other dark colors more recyclable. (Photo: Clariant)Clariant continues to develop new technology to improve the recyclability of plastics while offering packaging and product developers more color options. The latest development is a range of deep, dark colors that normally would have required the use of carbon black pigments that makes them undetectable by the near-infrared (NIR) sensors used in automated polymer sorting systems at recycling centers.
