HERMAN MILLER EMBODY® CHAIR FINDS SUPPORT IN DSM MATERIALS

Herman Miller, Inc selected three different material families from DSM for the production of key elements in the new Embody® chair.

The Embody represents the ultimate achievement in ergonomic task chair design. This radical departure from the usual ergonomics in office furniture uses design elements that mimic the human spine and provide absolute support to promote improved circulation and increased oxygenation to the brain. Embody does not use traditional foam; support is provided through unique design using materials such as Akulon® Polyamide 6 for support structures, and Arnitel® TPC and Sarlink® TPE for seating layers.

Meeting key requirements

The Embody arms, arm pedestals, back frame spine, and back frame antlers, all manufactured in Akulon K224-G6U, provide structural support for the unique body cradling design elements of the chair. These parts, which require a high degree of strength, stiffness, toughness and excellent surface aesthetics, are subjected to test requirements that include impacts, drop tests, frame flexures, as well as chemical resistance testing of assembled chairs. The integrated functionality of all the parts is only possible via injected molded engineering thermoplastics. Akulon provides a unique balance of physical and mechanical strength that meets both design and aesthetic requirements for the Embody.

In addition to Akulon® PA 6, DSM has been able to support Herman Miller with Arnitel® COPE and Sarlink TPE for the seating layers in the Embody. Arnitel TPC is used in the “global layer” of the seat, providing the right blend of strength, flexibility and comfort for use as one of the key components in the seat’s unique pixilated design. Sarlink TPE offers the necessary stiffness and creep resistance required for use in the “bull nose” seat component, allowing seat depth adjustments for different thigh lengths.

Over the course of three years, DSM worked with Herman Miller, Cascade Engineering, Royal Technologies, and ITW Dahti to provide technical assistance in the development of this chair through material selection, design, and processing expertise. Herman Miller has used DSM Akulon, Arnitel, and Sarlink materials in similar applications in a number of models including the Equa®, Mirra®, Aeron®, Caper®, Foray®, and Setu® chairs.
