STP-POLIMERI DEPENDS ON HEAT RESISTANT STANYL® PA46 FROM DSM FOR PROFESSIONAL INDUSTRIAL BRUSH MONOFILAMENT

Società Trasformazione Polimeri s.r.l., Rescaldina (MI) Italy, finds benefit from the high heat resistance and predictable bending stiffness of Stanyl® polyamide 4,6 (PA46) in the production of monofilament for industrial and professional brushes. This monofilament must retain strength in elevated temperatures, even when subjected to water, oils, chemicals and solvents.

"We evaluated a number of materials for high temperature monofilament production," said Paolo Sotgiu, production manager for STP-Polimeri. "The advantage of Stanyl, beyond its heat resistance, is its ability to be extruded into filaments in diameters from 0.2 to 1mm that show very good mechanical properties, including high stiffness, excellent bend recovery and resistance to deformation over time. Our customers, the brush manufacturers, benefit from superior quality and the potential to increase productivity, thanks to consistency in filament characteristics: there is simply no compromise in properties owing to heat."

STP-Polimeri worked with DSM Engineering Plastics technical personnel prior to production to optimize manufacturing, including extrusion heat ranges and post-extrusion stretching, the latter a process common in monofilament processing that strengthens polymers. "We were able to optimize extrusion parameters with DSM's help," added Sotgiu. After pre-production optimization, because STP-Polimeri employs unique approaches to high quality production, final tweaking of parameters was done in-house.

Used in a broad range of demanding applications in automotive, electrical, construction and other industries, Stanyl PA, as an engineering material, might at first seem overqualified for monofilament for brushes. However, the critical application environments of some brush types call not only for predictable bending stiffness and resistance to heat, but also resistance to abrasion, excellent surface finish, resistance to deformation and the high strength of Stanyl resins.
