STRIX RELIES ON STANYL® FROM DSM FOR THERMAL CONNECTOR USED IN LAUNCH OF BODUM MOCCA ESPRESSO MAKER

DSM Engineering Plastics Stanyl® TE250F6 30% glass-reinforced high-temperature polyamide 46 (PA46) is the material used for the combination power switch/cycle light and actuator in the Bodum Mocca espresso maker. Behind the decorative fascia, a thermostatic device operates a pushrod that resets the trip lever on the coffeemaker’s integral Strix brand U44 control and water heater, sealed into the base of the appliance. Because the Stanyl actuator lever is necessarily situated close to the coffeemaker’s heat source, the design exploits the mechanical properties of Stanyl. These include high surface and volume electrical resistivity, stiffness and strength at temperatures of 140 degrees, resistance to fatigue, and moldability.

“Strix’s strategy is to electrify the Italian coffee making market using DSM high-heat polyamide materials in key parts of our thermostatic control systems, just as we did in the global kettle market, where we are the leading supplier of thermostatic controls in the kettle market globally,” said Paul Snowden, Supply Chain Director for Isle of Man based Strix.

The Mocca Maker is a two-chamber device with an interconnecting funnel-shaped tube that doubles as the ground coffee holder. Water in the bottom chamber is heated, expanding the air and forming steam that pressurizes the lower chamber, driving hot water via the tube through the coffee into the top chamber.

The U44 control and heater unit, which provides a consistent brewing cycle, is sealed into the base of the coffeemaker. This control senses when the bottom chamber is empty, and the trip lever shuts off the electrical heater before overheating can occur. Safety backups include a mechanical pressure relief valve in the coffeemaker’s bottom chamber, as well as an additional overheat protection in the Strix controls.

“Stanyl TE250F6 was the only cost-effective engineering thermoplastic we found that retains excellent mechanical properties in this very hot environment, ensuring that the actuator lever does not bend or twist,” said Snowden.

“Polyamide 66 grades did not have the requisite high-temperature mechanical properties. Along with robust mechanicals, Stanyl TE250F6 can be injection-molded into complicated shapes with extremely tight tolerances. The material is used in the majority of our latest generation of integrated control systems.”

Stanyl is a family of heat-resistant polyamides from DSM Engineering Plastics. Stanyl's high crystallinity results in high heat distortion temperatures of 190ºC for unreinforced grades and up to 290ºC for reinforced. Stanyl grades are used in automotive clutch plates, air intake manifolds, chain tensioners; electrical components including motor frames and end laminates, circuit breakers, controls, and connectors; and home and power tool components, including heat shields and heat-resistant utensils.

Stanyl TE250F6 PA46 is a 30% glass-reinforced, heat-stabilized and flame-retardant formulation. It is typically specified for applications that benefit from its 180+C temperature resistance, good dimensional stability, low creep, high modulus, good in-mold flow, and ability to meet regulatory requirements.

“We are pleased that Strix uses high-heat Stanyl nylon in its thermal controls for electric kettle water heaters,” said John Tulip, Account Manager Stanyl, “and we expect to see Strix’s successful utilization of the same control technology into the electric coffeemaker market. DSM is honored to be such an integral part of the quality, safety and functionality of Strix products.”
