PPG enters global protective and marine coatings industry

Acquisition positions PPG in global protective and marine coatings markets

August 17, 2007 – PPG Industries' acquisition and integration of Ameron International's performance coatings and finishes group has created the company's new global protective and marine coatings (PMC) group. Also, the recent acquisition of Barloworld Coatings Australia further enriches PPG's coatings product line and is consistent with the company's development strategies.

The acquisition of Ameron involved the purchase of 32 manufacturing sites, distribution centers and sales offices in the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. It also included Ameron’s 40-percent ownership in Oasis-Ameron, Ltd., a paint manufacturing plant in Saudi Arabia.

“When we combined those businesses, the whole became much greater than the sum of the parts,” according to Tom Mauck, general manager of PPG’s new PMC business. “Our new enterprise has the great reach of PPG’s global distribution network, and Ameron’s strength of technical specifications and global customer relations.

“It’s a synergy that – virtually overnight – positioned our protective and marine coatings business to provide the global industry’s broadest range of products and services.”

The PMC business focuses on six key industries: power generation and transmission, worldwide marine vessels, oil and gas production (on- and off-shore), chemical and petrochemical manufacturing, water and wastewater treatment, and railcars.

“We provide a wide range of product-based solutions, and with our global distribution network, we are able to operate wherever our customers are, whether it is a shipyard in Singapore or a chemical processing facility in the Gulf of Mexico,” Mauck said. “We are in every corner of the world now, as PMC’s distribution network comprises more than 400 architectural paint stores and 1,200 independent dealers in the United States, more than 350 outlets in the Asia Pacific region, as well as an extensive refinish paint distribution network across Europe.

“In one fell swoop, the acquisition of Ameron coatings brought us an unsurpassed technical specifications position and put us on the global playing field,” Mauck said. “We’re now a recognized player in worldwide new construction segments.”
