St. Luke’s Hospital Positions Patients for Greater Comfort with the Orfit AIO All-in-One Immobilization Solution

Enhanced Comfort and Support Help Reduce Movement during Radiation Therapy

At ESTRO 27, the European Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology conference, Orfit Industries announced that St. Luke’s Hospital in Dublin has purchased 11 of Orfit Industries AIO Solution® for patient positioning and immobilization for use with their new Elektra Synergy Linear Accelerators. St. Luke’s, the largest radiotherapy department in the Republic of Ireland, selected the AIO Solution to enhance patient comfort, which can reduce movement and increase the precision of radiation delivery. Although the hospital primarily sought a belly board for pelvic patients, the intention is to use the all-in-one solution for head/neck and thorax/abdomen patients, as well. The AIO Solution, featuring four interchangeable, color-coded cushion sets, provides precise immobilization that is both reproducible yet comfortable.

“We evaluated several belly boards but only the Orfit solution met all our needs,” said Bill Garrett, Mould Room Manager, at St. Luke’s Hospital. “Our top priority was patient comfort. Our rationale is that if a patient is comfortable, there is less movement during therapy. And our mould room staff considered the patient positioning to be extremely reproducible.”

He added, “Another advantage of this system is that the full-length, carbon-fiber base plate can be kept on the treatment couch all day and you only have to change the cushion format. The cushions can be switched quickly and are easy to clean. The AIO solution fully meets the requirements of a modern department that is expanding into intensity-modulated radiation therapy techniques.”

Setting the standard for <2mm potential movement

The refinements in immobilization made possible by the Orfit solution ensure minimal movement of less than 2 mm, which is essential to the success of IMRT and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) procedures. The AIO Solution also offers ease of use that reduces patient set-up time. This product is designed for head and neck, thorax and abdomen (supine), breast (prone) and belly/pelvis (supine and prone) anatomical regions.

“Orfit technology starts with superior comfort, which in turn leads to a more relaxed patient who can remain immobile with less stress,” said Steven Cuypers, president, Orfit Industries. “By keeping the patient as the focus of our technology, we are achieving breakthrough results in quality and precision. We are confident that St. Luke’s Hospital will experience a significant improvement in patient satisfaction and therapy effectiveness with our AIO Solution.”

Orfit’s latest offerings on display at ESTRO 27

At the ESTRO 27 conference, in booth# B06:52, Orfit Industries is showcasing its newest technology – L-shape profiles for its patient immobilization masks. These profiles, which serve as the interface between the mask and base plate, offer greater ease of use and enhanced fixation compared to other methods such as push pins. They can be released very rapidly in case of emergency.

Orfit Industries is a Belgian manufacturer of medical devices that pioneered patient immobilization systems in Europe. The company researches, develops and manufactures its thermoplastic materials in house.
