Orfit Industries America Showcases Efficast® Pre-cut Thermoplastic Masks at 50th Annual AAPM Exhibition

Hands-on Demonstration and Portfolio of Advanced Immobilization Solutions to Highlight Orfit at Booth Display

HOUSTON, July 28 – Orfit Industries of America, the North American branch of Orfit Industries, headquartered in Antwerp, Belgium, is making its fifth appearance at the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Exhibition from July 27-31. In booth 415, Orfit Industries America is featuring their Efficast® thermoplastic masks, as part of the Raycast® High-precision Patient Immobilization/Positioning System, a new breakthrough technology for head, neck and shoulder immobilization systems used in radiation therapy. Orfit’s technology is already in use in North America and over 75 percent of European radiation therapy facilities. It has been shown to be vastly superior to current systems in patient comfort and accuracy of treatment allowing for less than 2 mm of movement by the patient. Orfit is also offering a hands-on demonstration of the system for the duration of the show at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Today’s radiation therapy is increasingly complex. As treatments become more precise and radiation becomes more defined, immobilization systems have to be developed to mirror these advances. Orfit Industries America’s “Gold Standard” of less than 2 mm of movement does just that. This product, which stabilizes a patient and keeps a consistent and comfortable fit throughout the patient’s treatment is an essential tool directly affecting the outcome of therapy.

“Orfit technology improves the delivery of radiation therapy across the board – for the patient, the radiation oncologist, the radiation therapist and the medical physicist,” said Martin Ratner, Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Orfit Industries America. “Unlike the generic types of plastics used in traditional masks, our proprietary thermoplastic is formulated specifically for optimizing radiation therapy delivery. Efficast is easier to both apply and mold during the course of treatment, and ensures the highest degree of stability and comfort. Cancer centers across the United States are changing to Efficast masks because they’re head and shoulders above the others.”

Major advantages of Efficast masks include:

• Sub 2 mm precision: Efficast masks have been engineered to provide sub 2 mm precision and reproducibility of the immobilization while being thinner than other masks routinely used in radiation oncology departments. Thinner Efficast masks enable close contouring to the patients’ anatomy and an excellent skin sparing effect.

• Patient comfort: During molding, the material contracts uniformly to avoid pressure points. A special coating prevents the mask from adhering to the skin or hair.

• Lower-temperature molding: The pre-cut Efficast masks can be softened in warm water, avoiding discomfort to the therapist and the patient during the molding and setting process. On average Orfit masks can be molded in water 10 to 15 F cooler than other materials. If needed, the entire mask or a portion can be reformed by warming, thus saving the cost of a new mask.

Visitors to booth 415 will see a hands-on demonstration of Orfit Industries America’s Efficast pre-cut thermoplastic masks. Visitors have the opportunity to watch the molding process, feel the material as it is applied and molded and see for themselves how supple, yet rigid it becomes once hardening. They will also be able to experience, in a live setting, the lack of movement the Efficast masks produce versus competitive products. A full team of Orfit representatives are on hand to answer any question or address any concerns you might have.
