At ASTRO, Orfit® Industries America Introduces Enhanced Fixation Technology for Efficast® Thermoplastic Masks

An Efficast mask featuring the new winged “L” shaped profile that allows for easier handling of the mask and a more secure and firm fit to the baseboard. A unique laser welding process also ensures the bond between the clasp and mask stays strong through the life of the mask.BOSTON, Sept. 21, 2008 – To increase precision, safety and usability for patient immobilization during radiation therapy, Orfit® Industries America today announced a new fixation technology for its Efficast® thermoplastic masks. At the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in Boston, Mass., Orfit Industries America is showcasing new winged “L” profiles that secure Efficast masks for head, neck and shoulders into the high precision slots in the Orfit base plate. Compared to competitive u-shaped or s-type masks with commonly used push pins or that use swivel clamps, these new winged “L” profiles can be easily grasped with the fingers -- make it easier to mold Efficast masks, position them precisely and remove them quickly in case of emergency. Orfit is displaying the profiles as part of its complete immobilization solutions at booth 1612.

Orfit Industries President, Steven Cuypers explains a head and neck mask to members of the St. Luke’s Hospital Cancer Treatment team on one of the 11 AIO Solution systems recently purchased by the Dublin, Ireland hospital. At ESTRO 27, the European Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology conference, Orfit Industries announced that St. Luke’s Hospital in Dublin has purchased 11 of Orfit Industries AIO Solution® for patient positioning and immobilization for use with their new Elektra Synergy Linear Accelerators. St. Luke’s, the largest radiotherapy department in the Republic of Ireland, selected the AIO Solution to enhance patient comfort, which can reduce movement and increase the precision of radiation delivery. Although the hospital primarily sought a belly board for pelvic patients, the intention is to use the all-in-one solution for head/neck and thorax/abdomen patients, as well. The AIO Solution, featuring four interchangeable, color-coded cushion sets, provides precise immobilization that is both reproducible yet comfortable.
