Anti-microbial sealing rings for the food industry are based on Milliken’s Elastoguard™ technology

Responding to demands from the food industry for equipment components that minimise the presence and effects of bacteria and microbes, the Dutch-based ERIKS group is introducing a range of sealing rings for the dairy industry produced from a special rubber compound developed in conjunction with Milliken Chemical.

DSO is a manufacturer of high-volume replacement and maintenance parts for processing plants in the ready-to-eat food and dairy industries, as well as the cosmetic and pharmaceutical markets.

NEW ELASTOGUARD® RUBBER COMPOUND OFFERS ANTIMICROBIAL, ANTI-FATIGUE SOLUTION TO NEW ULTRASAN™ MATS FROM MILLIKEN-KEX

New UltraSan™ mat, manufactured by Milliken-Kex, a business unit of Milliken & Company, uses Elastoguard® rubber, a new line of antimicrobial heat-cured rubber compounds from Milliken Chemical Speciality Elastomers (MCSE). The new mat offers outstanding antimicrobial and anti-fatigue properties for a wide range of demanding applications. CLEVELAND – (Feb. 13, 2004) – Muscle fatigue and joint aches and pains are common among people who work in the food processing, food preparation, food service, and related industries. These individuals typically spend the majority of their workday on their feet. Historically, the attempted solution has been to equip these work places with rubber matting to reduce strain on the legs, lower back, and other parts of the body that are vulnerable to fatigue and pain. However, rubber mats are very prone to attack by bacteria and fungi because their chemical constituents often provide an ideal source of nutrients that support microbial growth. Further, these mats are often used in warm, moist environments rich in microorganisms – conditions that are ideal for proliferation of these life forms. Microbial build-up is not only unsanitary and odorous, but can create unsafe conditions resulting from slipping, tripping, or falling. It can also result in premature deterioration of the matting, which can result in expensive, ongoing replacement costs.

MARKET FOR MICROBE-RESISTANT PRODUCTS EXPANDING, SAFE ANTIMICROBIAL RUBBER ANSWERS IMPORTANT INDUSTRY NEEDS

MILAN – (May 7, 2003) – The world around us is teeming with microscopic organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. In fact, scientists say that life as we know it would be impossible without microbes. Some microorganisms are highly beneficial to humans, helping us digest our food, decomposing our waste, and playing a key role in production of fermented foods like beer, wine, cheese, yogurt, vinegar, and seitan. However, other microbes can make us ill, cause ferrous metals to rust and food to spoil, or lead to stains and odors that can damage products and property. As a result, the demand for antimicrobial (AM) products is growing rapidly, with more than $1 billion (USD) now spent annually on biocides for items as diverse as food-processing conveyor belts, liquid soap, health and beauty aids, medical wound-care devices, catheters, and rubber mats.

MILLIKEN’S NEW ELASTOGUARD® ANTIMICROBIAL RUBBER ADDRESSES CLEANING CHALLENGES, REDUCES DOWNTIME & DETERIORATION OF PARTS

A new line of antimicrobial heat-cured rubber compounds from Milliken Chemical Speciality Elastomers (MCSE) has been introduced to help solve cleaning challenges in food-processing, packaging, medical, and other applications prone to microbial contamination. Called Elastoguard®, these new patented antimicrobial elastomers provide an effective way to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi, and yeasts on rubber parts, such as seals, gaskets, O-rings, wheels, casters, diaphragms, bladders, packings, liners, tubing, and belts.
