GREAT LAKES TO RAISE ELEMENTAL BROMINE AND BROMINE DERIVATIVES PRICES

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK) today announced it will increase minimum prices of elemental bromine, 48% hydrobromic acid, ethylene dibromide, and methyl bromide industrial, effective for all shipments after October 1, 2004 worldwide, where contracts allow.

New minimum prices (in bulk) will be:

• Elemental bromine $1,500/MT

• 48% Hydrobromic acid $900/MT

• Ethylene Dibromide $1,250/MT

• Non-agricultural use methyl bromide $3,200/MT

Bromine derivatives pricing, with the exception of bromine-based flame retardants, will be affected accordingly.

The company stated that the price increases are necessary to offset continued hyperinflation on all cost fronts and to move closer to achieving reinvestment economics.

“With increased frequency this year, demand has outstripped supply resulting in spot shortages in the industry,” said Rick Landrum, vice president of bromine performance products. “Investment is necessary to reduce these availability concerns, achieve a sustained acceptable level of performance for our customers, and to avoid allocation mechanisms as a means to balancing supply and demand.”
