iGuzzini illuminazione S.p.A. aims to meets its motto “Make Better Light for Better Life” by working with Lexan SLX resin.
iGuzzini illuminazione, Italian architectural lighting manufacturer , is a leader in technical lighting, providing stylish lighting solutions to some of Europe's most visible locations. With its extreme resistance to harsh environmental conditions, Lexan SLX resin is a superior fit for many lighting applications requiring the use of polycarbonate materials.
GE - Plastics & iGuzzini
"GE-Plastics had the type and quality of material we needed to meet our customer's needs," said iGuzzini illuminazione Research Center Director, Piergiovanni Ceregioli. "This particular location required luminaries with long life and low maintenance. Working with GE-Plastics allowed us to find the material that would best fit our needs and those of our customer."
iGuzzini identified several needs key to the success of a new lighting system: the luminaries need superior resistance to extreme weather conditions, the ability to withstand the yellowing typical of lighting applications, to increase the product lifetime and reduce maintenance costs. Meeting these needs would allow iGuzzini to maintain the rigorously high standards necessary to meet its motto: Better Light for Better Life.
iGuzzini selected Lexan EXRL0086 resin, an advanced polycarbonate copolymer resin grade in the Lexan SLX resin product family for its customer.
Lexan SLX resins offer long-lasting weatherability and lower yellowing compared to similar standard polycarbonates. They are injection moldable and provide better resistance to chemical and environmental elements, potentially eliminating the need for costly secondary coating applications.
GE-Plastics offers products that can help lighting manufacturers achieve their innovative and imaginative designs and products that feature a stylish look with low maintenance.
Lexan SLX resin has the toughness of Lexan resin but with added scratch resistance and extreme weatherability. The material is so versatile and appealing, it can replace paint on automobile body panels.
Lexan resin is available with a wide variety of additive options such as UV stabilizers and mold release agents. The portfolio includes eco-conforming, FDA-compliant, high flow and glass reinforced grades.
Lexan resins offer:
• High impact strength
• Inherent "water-clear" transparency
• Product purity, consistency, and durability
• High heat resistance — RTI up to 125°C
• Dimensional stability at elevated temperatures
• Unlimited colors — transparent, translucent and opaque
• Flame resistance
• UV stability
• FDA compliance
• Very good processability
Typical applications include: computer housings and peripherals, building and construction glazing, optical lenses, corrective eyewear, sun wear lenses, CDs, DVDs, health care components, water bottles, cellular phone housing, and electrical appliances.
