A New Grade of Eastar® From Eastman Chemicals Supports a Technological Breakthrough In the Drug Delivery Device Sector

CAPELLE A/D IJSSEL, THE NETHERLANDS - SEDAT, design and manufacture company of plastic injection-moulded drug delivery devices, has selected Eastman Chemical’s new grade MN058 of Eastar® for an innovative angiographic syringe that has achieved a technological breakthrough in the medical sector.

Designed to operate in conjunction with a new type of injector that controls the delivery of a contrast medium into the patient’s blood system, SEDAT’s ELS

200 ml-angiographic syringe is an innovation both in concept and performance. Based on a sole partnership agreement with Medtron of Saarbrücken (Germany) who manufactures the injector, SEDAT is the sole producer of this type of syringe in Europe. The ELS (for Easy Loading System) uses a new patented concept for the fitting with the injector and relies on Eastman’s new grade MN058 of Eastar.

In comparison with the previous state-of-the-art syringe moulded in polypropylene, it can be fit to the injector by simply sliding it into a holding sleeve and locking it in position instead of the 3-4 fitting steps previously required.

In terms of performance, the ELS syringe provides a 50%-increase in the injection pressure without a pressure jacket for coronarography and coronaroplasty applications, and a 20% pressure increase with a pressure jacket for ventriculography applications.

According to Fabrice Bonacci, Project Manager at SEDAT, “We found Eastar MN058 to be the material of choice for the ELS because of its unique combination of properties that meets the specific requirements of this critical application: stress-cracking and bursting resistance, crystal-clear transparency and medically approved compatibility with the contrast media used in this specific field of interventional radiology.”

“It should be noted that these unrivalled new levels of performance are achieved totally thanks to the top-level profile of properties of the Eastman’s material”, Fabrice Bonacci adds.

The ELS syringe has been marketed worldwide since early 2005. Due to the improved performance it provides, combined with user-friendliness and ease of operation, the product has opened a new market niche by filling a gap in the delivery device offer to the medical sector. “In addition, Eastar MN058 has proven to be more cost-effective than the PC material that was the alternative material solution, providing an overall reduction of approx. 50% of the system cost”, Fabrice Bonacci adds.
