LEADING CANADIAN SALMON FARMER SELECTS NETS WITH DYNEEMA®

Twenty 150 m Containment Nets with Dyneema® Fiber for Aquaculture Expansion in Newfoundland Waters

DSM Dyneema is pleased to announce that GMG, the manufacturing division of Cooke Aquaculture, a Canadian leader in salmon farming, has selected nets made with ultra-strong Dyneema® fiber to support the company’s expansion into the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador. Cooke’s Cold Ocean Salmon division has ordered mesh for twenty 150m containment nets made with Dyneema®, manufactured by Badinotti (Italy). The nets, which will be constructed in Canada by GMG, feature the exceptionally strong, lightweight Dyneema® fiber, which makes them easier to handle, prevents fish escapes and extends net life.

“Cooke Aquaculture, through its Newfoundland company, Cold Ocean Salmon is investing in clusters of state-of-the-art salmon farms off the south coast of the province, and we wanted to be sure we installed the best netting technology available on these farms,” said Alan Cook, General Manager of GMG. “We believe nets made with Dyneema® will help us grow our business in a profitable way. We have already tested the material and are confident that it will perform better than traditional nets. If all goes according to plan, Cold Ocean Salmon will order another 40 nets next year.”

Dyneema® fiber delivers key benefits for aquaculture netting: exceptional strength and toughness to resist damage from biting fish and predators; lightness of weight and resistance to water absorption for easier handling; low elongation to maintain net shape; and durability to reduce the frequency of repairs and extend the life of the net. Cold Ocean Salmon’s purchase marks the first major deployment of netting with Dyneema® in the salmon farming industry, building upon the product’s success with the farming of sea bream in the Mediterranean and of cod in Northern Europe.

“Netting made with Dyneema® has proven to be highly effective for farming biting fish such as sea bream and cod. However, there are also many benefits for farming non-biting fish, such as salmon.” said André van Wageningen, market segment manager Aquaculture for DSM Dyneema. “The superior properties of our unique fiber will help to grow and protect Cooke’s investment in Newfoundland in a profitable way.”
