DSM ELASTOMERS’ NEW REACTIVE EXTRUDER HAS STARTED COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION FOR MOTOR OIL ADDITIVES

Heerlen, 09 October 2008 - Following several months of successful tests, commercial production of new high performance EP(D)M grades is now fully operational DSM Elastomers’ new reactive extruder (REX) line and product is now available for shipment to customers. The new REX line is fully integrated in the DSM Elastomers production site in Triunfo, Brazil. The plant uses state of the art technologies for reactive extrusion.

In its initial phase, the facility will produce downsheared and functionalized polymers for use as viscosity index improvers (VII). These provide the basis for multi-grade oils that enhance fuel efficiency and help reduce emissions. In addition to polymers for motor oils, the facility will produce a range of innovative downsheared and functionalized EP(D)M-based materials for use as modifiers and compatibilizers for plastics and other polymeric compositions. 4 New REX grades are under development and have reached the phase of pre-commercial customer evaluation.

In addition, customers are set to benefit from future innovations for the motor oils market, with the new extrusion line providing a platform for further developments in petroleum additives applications. DSM Elastomers President Jan-Paul de Vries says: “This new facility demonstrates our commitment to innovation in the EPDM Business. The new REX line enables us to combine an effective production method with the highest level of responsiveness. We look forward to working closely with our customers to explore the further innovation potential of this technology platform.”

Mr. de Vries adds: “For more than 30 years, DSM Elastomers has provided quality products to EPDM markets. With this investment in Brazil, we now have a stable platform to continue to develop and market a broad range of EP(D)M-based additives for a variety of (new) applications.”

With the new REX line DSM Elastomers is underscoring their value proposition: High Quality, High Service and High Security of Supply. With this line they will have complete control of capacity and quality which will be maintained to the usual high Keltan standards. They will be able to support the plant with the considerable technological expertise available within the corporation.
