Clariant launches new ED Pigments for decorative and industrial paint application at ECS 2011

Muttenz, 30 March 2011 – Colorant and paint producers can take advantage of easy, uniform dispersion for more colors than ever before with Clariant’s launch of new Easily Dispersible (ED) Pigments at the European Coatings Show 2011.

The addition of three new pigments to Clariant’s existing range of Easily Dispersible pigments for water-based decorative pigment dispersions – the EDW range – is a major step towards completion of the whole color circle from yellow to blue for decorative applications. Clariant aims to achieve this target by the beginning of 2012, to offer the decorative market a full EDW pigment range that includes high performance organic pigments as well as economic grades.

The currently available members of the EDW pigments range are:

• Novoperm® Orange HL 70-EDW (new)

• Hostaperm® Scarlet GO-EDW

• Hostaperm® Red D3G 70-EDW (new)

• Hostaperm® Pink E-EDW

• Hostaperm® Violet RL-EDW (new)

Clariant’s EDW pigments address the general trend in the decorative market for higher performance. They offer a unique approach to simplifying the pigment dispersion process by removing the need for an expensive and time consuming bead milling step.

As a result, manufacturers can take advantage of a faster, more efficient manufacturing process while reducing manufacturing costs and raising productivity.

These same benefits can be also experienced by producers of solvent and water-based paints with the EDS and the new EDU pigment range for industrial applications.

At ECS 2011, Clariant announces the availability of a new “Universal” Easily Dispersible pigment for industrial paint systems with the addition of Novoperm Yellow F2G-EDU to its range.

The following EDU pigments are now available:

• Hostaperm® Yellow H3G-EDU

• Novoperm® Yellow F2G-EDU (new)

• Hostaperm® Red D3G 70-EDU

• Hostaperm® Pink E-EDU

The EDU pigments are ideally designed for water-based but also compatible for solvent-based systems. The full range will be completed by the start of 2012.

Clariant already offers a full range of ED Pigments for solvent-based industrial paints

(EDS range).

It is Clariant’s innovative ED Pigments manufacturing process that enables all ED Pigments to offer their unmatched productivity and dispersibility performance. Paint manufacturers can add the ED pigment into their paint system using only a dissolver because the optimum amount of additive is coated onto the pigment surface during pigment manufacture. This facilitates wetting and separation of pigment particles during the dispersion process in paint manufacturing.

Manufacturers can be confident of achieving tinting strength in dissolver dispersion within about 30 minutes, which can typically not be achieved with conventional pigments. The shear forces in the dissolver are sufficient to develop good fineness of grind and suitable color properties for industrial paints and decorative colorants.

ED Pigments can be co-dispersed in one mill base formulation with other organic ED pigments and inorganic pigments to achieve a specific color shade.

Dr Gerd König, Head of Coatings at Clariant comments: “Our ED Pigments are proving to be a huge success because of their ability to simplify production and reduce manufacturing costs for producers of solvent and water based systems, for industrial and decorative applications. We are pleased to introduce ECS 2011 visitors to our extended EDW and EDU ranges, bringing the productivity benefits to more colors than ever before.”
