N-SPEC® 50 pipeline cleaning chemical now also allowed offshore UK

Brenntag is continuing to expand their offshore N-SPEC® business geographically. Recently, this company already received approval from Norwegian authorities to use its N-SPEC® 50 pipeline cleaning chemistry offshore. Now also the UK organization CEFAS (The Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science) approved the product for use in UK territorial waters.

The approvals are based on tests done according HOCNF (Harmonised Offshore Chemical Notification Format) procedures, which are universally accepted by the North Sea countries. The product has been thoroughly tested on various items such as aquatic toxicity, biodegradation and bioaccumulation in marine environments.

“For every chemical producer, user and distributor, safety and especially environmental safety is a key attribute in day-to-day operations”, says Theo Verleun, Business Manager Oil & Gas at Brenntag. “The CEFAS acceptance of N-SPEC® 50 is a perfect example of Brenntag’s commitment to (environmental) safety and it is a next step towards the growth of our European (N-SPEC®) services business.”

N-Spec® 50 is a dispersant /solvent developed by Brenntag Oil & Gas. It is designed to penetrate and remove organic deposits, like paraffin and waxes in oil and gas applications. It has already been successfully applied in cleaning crude oil and gas pipelines, flow lines and gas lift wells.

Brenntag is an important solutions provider in the pipeline and system cleaning industry. Its special expertise in handling fouled pipes, rail and road tankers, as well as amine, glycol and heat-transfer units in refineries, has led the company to develop an innovative package of environmentally friendly cleaning chemicals, together with supporting technology, under the N-SPEC® brand-name. An important advantage of the unique N-SPEC® chemicals and services is that they allow pipeline operators to clean their lines – online – without interrupting operations, thereby eliminating downtime and loss of production.

The N-SPEC® chemical cleaning method makes use of specially formulated tensides to emulsify pipeline sediments rather than scraping-out these residues with traditional mechanical devices. This technology has successfully removed paraffin, waxes, black powder, hydrates, scales, sand and metal scraps. The N-SPEC® package offered includes a professional technical support team, cleaning chemicals and a maintenance program designed to meet the customer’s specific needs.

Brenntag is the foremost chemicals distributor in Europe and recorded sales of Euro 4.6 billion in 2004 through the efforts of 8,900 employees at 300 locations worldwide. The Brenntag Oil & Gas Team manages a full line of products and services to the oil and gas producing and processing industries. Brenntag has been an important player in the oil and gas industry in North America and Canada and is actively working on expanding its presence in Europe. From their office in Dordrecht, The Netherlands, a dedicated team of sales people and technicians supports the Brenntag sales organisations throughout Europe.
