Borouge reflects upon its Water for the World™ achievements on World Water Day 2010

Over 130,000 people directly benefited from the Water for the World programme in 2009 in Asia

Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, reflects on its Water for the World™ achievements of last year, and looks forward to the next 12 months on World Water Day, March 22, 2010.

Water for the World is a unique initiative by Borouge and Borealis to help address some of critical problems in water and sanitation around the world by sharing their expertise and know-how and working together with industrial partners and charities to provide practical systems.

Over the last year Borouge has worked with a number of partners around the world to improve the lives of over 50,000 people by providing water and sanitation systems in countries like China, India and Vietnam. Working as an active member of the Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) team, Borouge contributed to improving another 88,400 people’s lives, mainly in Africa.

“Borouge wholeheartedly supports the 2010 World Water Day theme of Clean Water for a Healthy World.” says William Yau, Chief Executive Officer of Borouge’s Marketing Company. “Today, climate change, rising population and unsustainable practices are putting water resources and lives at risk. Our Water for the World programme was created to address this global challenge and help alleviate some of the problems associated with the lack of access to water and sanitation in many parts of the world.”

Examples of Water for the World achievements of last year, bringing water and hope to those in need

Providing drinking water supply to Sichuan earthquake resettlement Camp, China

Early 2009 saw the inauguration of a new drinking water system at one of the temporary villages set up to house the victims of the earthquake that hit Sichuan, China in May 2008 under the “Drop of Hope” project. This project saw Borouge and its partners – the Singapore Water Association and Lien Aid, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) – build a new water system to supply safe, clean drinking water a day to some 10,000 displaced victims of the earthquake.

Developing sustainable water system for the research centre in Rajasthan, India

When the Vishwadeep Gurukul organisation decided to set up an education and research centre in Rajasthan, India, a very arid area, they developed an imaginative water harvesting system using a series of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) lined ponds to collect and store the water to feed the school, university, hostel and other buildings. Borouge and Dura-Line, a key customer, provided the polyethylene (PE) pipes and fittings for the project.

Providing a continuous water supply to residents of Bhaktapur, Nepal

In Bhaktapur, Nepal, Borouge worked with the Sushma Koirala Memorial Trust and Hisi Polyethylene Industries, a local pipe producer, to design and install a distribution system to provide a continuous supply of water to a school and some 200 houses in the Tathali district of the town

Bringing a polyethylene “Life Line” for Children’s Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam

Borouge organised events with the Vietnamese Water Association in 2009 to provide them with knowledge on the best use of PE pipe materials. Borouge worked with Lien Aid again on a project at the National Hospital of Paediatrics in Hanoi, Vietnam. The “Life Lines” project provided a new water treatment unit to deliver clean drinking water throughout the hospital, helping the 40,000 in-patient children to recover more quickly from their illness.

Water for the World: Looking ahead

In the next year Borouge will continue with its Water for the World activities in India and Vietnam to improve the local knowledge of the benefits of plastics systems in water supply and sanitation. It will continue to undertake local reference projects to support this programme and bring water to needy around the world.

In addition, Borouge will work with its customers to expand its range of irrigation products to improve systems manufacture and develop financial and environmental models to help promote the use of micro-irrigation systems. This will help reduce water consumption in agriculture and improve crop yield to meet the food needs of the world’s growing population.
