Fact Sheet - Borouge Petrochemical Complex Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, UAE
Borouge consists of two entities: a production company Abu Dhabi Polymers Co Ltd (Borouge) based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a marketing company, Borouge Pte Ltd, based in Singapore.
A key pillar of Borouge’s competitive strategy is its USD 1.2 billion petrochemical complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Operated under Abu Dhabi Polymers Co Ltd (Borouge), it was the first production facility in the Middle East to be equipped with Borealis' proprietary Borstar® Enhanced Polyethylene (PE) polymerization technology.
The petrochemical complex began operations in late 2001 and was officially opened in October 2002. It produces Enhanced PE products using Borealis’ proprietary Borstar technology to meet the demanding needs of the packaging and pipe industries in the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
In early 2005, the facility successfully carried out its first turnaround since its start-up four years ago. The turnaround, which took a total of 31 days and involved an estimated 3,600 workers, was completed six days earlier than planned. Borouge also took this opportunity to complete its debottlenecking exercise to expand the PE production capacity of the site to 580 kilo tonnes (kts).
Capacity
A 600 kts ethylene cracker and two Borstar bimodal PE lines, each capable of producing 225 kts of bimodal high density and Borstar Enhanced PE. Debottlenecking in the first quarter of 2005 increased PE production capacity to 580 kts.
Location
The 2.6 sq. kilometres (260 hectares) petrochemical complex is located in Ruwais, about 250 km west of Abu Dhabi City in the United Arab Emirates.
Other Facilities
Other facilities at the Ruwais plant include PE utilities and facilities for product handling and distribution.
