Supercure™ makes quantum leap in efficiency for energy distribution cables
Borealis, the leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, has introduced a new Supercure™ solution for cable insulation for the electricity distribution industry. Supercure LC8205, a crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) for insulation of medium voltage (MV) cables, provides cables with superior electrical performance and network reliability.
In today’s environment of rising energy demands and the rapid expansion of electricity networks, Supercure LC8205 insulation can help to deliver the power supply reliability demanded by utilities and consumers. This XLPE grade offers enhanced and consistent electrical performance for MV cables by suppressing the growth of harmful water trees which can negatively influence insulation effectiveness and cable lifetime. LC8205 ’s excellent ageing resistance and robust strength enhance insulation performance, and thereby cable performance, over the long-term.
The new grade allows extruders to use faster line speeds without compromising on cable quality. LC8205 is based on the established copolymer technology in combination with Borealis Supercure polymer technology, which achieves quicker crosslinking using less heat and without affecting insulation performance. The material’s excellent scorch retardency also reduces extruder cleaning requirements and can make longer run lengths possible.
The B. V. Twentsche Kabelfabriek in Holland has integrated the new grade into its medium voltage cable production. Mr L.D. Pots, Manager R&D Energy and Installation Cables, B. V. Twentsche Kabelfabriek comments: “By introducing the new Supercure copolymer on our caternary line for MV insulation, we managed to increase the line speed substantially. Together with the experience of a better process window and less scorch, the total efficiency is increased. There is also a benefit for our customers as we see a clear improvement in electrical properties, such as an increase of break down strength after ageing. Supercure seems to be a good improvement for all involved in the production chain, including the end user.”
