New fiber optical cables from Belden
As a leading supplier of signal transmission solutions for HD applications, Belden has an impressive and comprehensive fiber optic range which includes indoor and outdoor cable products in tight buffered and loose tube constructions. Recently, Belden has introduced two new ranges of fiber optic cable, combining high performance with key user benefits: tactical fiber optic cables and Heat-Resistant SMPTE311M Hybrid Optical Fiber Cables.
Tactical Fiber Optic Cables
Designed to meet the demand for smaller and lighter weight equipment, these new tactical fiber optic cables can be easily transported and quickly installed and can overcome the field deployment problems when covering outdoor events.
Using, transporting and deploying the smaller, lighter and more resilient tactical cables bring many benefits for installers. Primarily, the compact round cables take up less space, weigh less and installation is quicker and easier. Their ruggedness, resilience and toughness mean that they can be repeatedly used without compromising their high quality performance. They are compatible with all optical fiber connector types.
The key advantages include superior bend performance, better pulling tension, low shape memory effect, ease of termination, excellent impact and crush resistance, plus abrasion, cut and chemical resistance.
The superior bend performance means very low bending loss across the full useable spectrum of wavelengths from 1260 to 1625nm. The fibers can be coiled into a 32mm diameter loop, which is 25 times better than conventional single-mode fibers, and also a 20mm diameter loop which with <0.2dB is still 2.5 times better than G.652.
The cables can be used in temperatures as low as -70°C because of improved micro and macro bending of the bend-insensitive fiber. It has Zero Water Peak (ZWP) as the first fiber eliminates the water peak defect which is common in conventional single-mode fibers. It also has good splicing compatibility, which reduces installation time, because the fiber ensures seamless splicing to existing standard G.652 fibers.
According to Werner Eich Market Manager Broadcast EMEA, these single-mode cables are smaller and lighter in weight that traditional tactical fiber ones: “As a result, they have a smaller bend radius capability, improved flexibility and resilience (cable memory) over a broad range of outdoor temperatures and weather conditions. They are ideal for use in digital camera transmissions, electronic news gathering and OB vehicles and similar events.”
Mr. Eich adds; The new tactical fiber optic cable will be widely accepted by the OB and outdoor event professionals, who require easier cable deployment but also have to guarantee the very highest quality transmission in all weathers, often from very tough sites and in difficult conditions.”
Heat-Resistant SMPTE311M Hybrid Optical Fiber Cables
To meet the high performance requirements of HDTV camera systems, Belden has introduced Brilliance® Heat-Resistant SMPTE311M Hybrid Optical Fiber Cables. These hybrid fiber optical cables are designed to surmount over-heating problem experienced in outside HDTV broadcasting. This is particularly common with black cables in direct sunlight because their internal resistance can be reduced to below critical level causing the camera to shut down in case of short circuit.
Heat resistant Brilliance 7804X cables are designed to overcome these problems through the use of insulation with a higher thermal stability. This makes it ideal for use in outdoor as well as indoor transmissions: to link different cameras to an OB van in outside broadcasting or to service permanent installations connecting studio cameras to the control room.
Brilliance 7804X is a composite cable which includes a high voltage power line for HDTV camera, two control lines and two optical fibers for A/V transmission. The cable is available in three versions: halogen-free and PVC versions for studios and permanent installations and a PUR version for mobile applications. All of them are available with put-ups of 305, 500 and 1000m and can be supplied with special put-up for easy connecting on the drum.
Mr. Eich adds: “The new cables are ideal for use in professional broadcasting, studios, sport stadia, concert venues and live outside broadcasts. Werner Eich says: “Belden’s new hybrid optical fiber cable is designed to meet today’s high standards for HD television cameras and as well as to fulfil future performance requirements. We anticipate – that word again- that the cable will be widely used, particularly by people involved with outside broadcasting where the very highest quality of TV transmission and performance is required.”
Mr. Eich stresses that the benefits of these cables have not been gained at the expense of performance – which is increasingly important in HDTV. “Belden continually introduces new developments and products for a range of different applications for the creation, production and delivery of entertainment content, including Mobile TV, IPTV and D-Cinema.
“While an estimated 95% of all broadcast facilities still have to adopt the HDTV format, we have already invested in the products to help companies make the switch. Any cable that saves installation time, improves performance and is cost effective greatly assists installers.”
