New Altuglas® acrylic resins for external bodyparts in the automotive and caravan markets
At K2004, Altuglas International, an Arkema subsidiary and the world leader in PMMA, announced new acrylic resins specifically developed for a particular extrusion technology: Capstock. In this technology, multilayer thermoplastic sheets, with PMMA as the outer layer, are extruded and then thermoformed. Today Altuglas International announces enhanced PMMA acrylic resins for Capstock, and new opaque PMMA grades for Injection Molding.
Three years after announcing PMMA for the Capstock technology, Altuglas International, through its ongoing efforts in product innovation, has become European leader in this business, and is playing a major role in the success of this technology used to manufacture bodywork panels for the automotive and caravan markets. Altuglas International has developed new PMMA grades for this technology with superior chemical resistance, new visual effects including frosted or matt, and a range of metallic colors for lightweight body panels.
Altuglas International has also brought out a new series of products for the automotive market: opaque acrylic resins have been developed to create small external decorative components, such as wing-mirror shells and door trims, using an alternative process, injection molding. With this process, injected parts are made entirely from PMMA.
These new Altuglas PMMA grades, combined with their respective technology - Capstock or injection molding - offer similar advantages:
- No paint or varnish required (as is generally the case with finished parts of this type)
- Outstanding depth of color and surface finish, with excellent scratch and UV resistance
- Lower costs through fewer operations
- Lighter than steel
- Recyclable.
