Comprehensive range of glass fiber reinforcement products
Used throughout the world for a variety of innovative composites solutions, Owens Corning’s high-quality products are manufactured to the most demanding, global specifications to meet customer requirements in terms of performance and cost. These products are a key component of Owens Corning’s System Thinking™ approach, which is targeted at meeting ongoing customer demands for higher productivity, higher value products and excellent support.
Product information, actual parts and other potential applications of the following products are on display at JEC: bulky rovings; chopped strand mat; continuous filament mat; dry chopped strand; dry formed mat; knitted fabric; milled fiber; multi-end continuous roving; single-end continuous roving; wet chopped strand; wet formed mat; and woven roving.
Innovative composites applications
A range of state-of-the-art composites applications are displayed. The largest single item is a General Motors 2001 Silverado pickup truck box, which is the first high-volume commercial application of a new preform technology pioneered by Owens Corning – the OC™ Preformable System. This technology combines a proprietary glass fiber with unique binder technology to enable efficient manufacturing of reinforcement preforms. For the Chevrolet Silverado, the molded parts reduce the total weight of the vehicle by more than 22.7 kg; the tailgate itself is 6.8 kg lighter than a current steel tailgate, which makes it easier to open and close.
Other composites parts on display include a snowboard; an I-beam section; a boat deck cross-section; an engine cover seat for a 3-wheel vehicle; a steering wheel handle and cover; and a windmill model.
“These are exciting times for Owens Corning as we continue to meet the ever-increasing demand for new composites applications,” said Heinz Otto, president, Owens Corning’s Composites Systems Business. “As the composites industry leader, we believe that any application in which steel, wood and aluminum are used today has the potential to be composed of composites materials tomorrow. We are committed to providing our customers with complete composites solutions that ensure sustainable growth.”
