How recyclable carpets could transform the flooring industry
Most carpets still end up in landfill or incineration, locked out of the circular economy. In Europe, an estimated 1.6 million tonnes of carpet waste reach the end of their lives every year. According to data from Deutsche Umwelthilfe from 2017, the vast majority of it, nearly 98%, is either incinerated or sent to landfill. While the use of polyester has improved recycling rates, this improvement remains in the low single-digit percentage range. Germany alone contributes around 400,000 tonnes to this waste stream annually.

Notably, Clariant received this recognition despite not being a direct supplier, highlighting the strategic importance of Clariant’s innovative flame retardant technologies in Schneider’s upstream value chain.
Clariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemical company, today announced its strategic joint venture with FUHUA, focused on developing innovative non-halogenated flame retardants. The new initiative, which is subject to customary approval from relevant authorities, aims to create next-generation phosphorus-based flame retardants to serve several industries like building and construction, automotive, electric and electronic, directly addressing the tightening technical and regulatory environment in these sectors.

Clariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemical company, today announced that it has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shanghai Boiler Works, a full subsidiary of Shanghai Electric, specializing in energy conversion and the development of new energy applications, to jointly foster innovation in sustainable energy solutions. The partners will combine their expertise to advance green energy projects in China. The agreement is the result of close and successful cooperation in Shanghai Electric’s new biomass-to-green methanol plant in Taonan, Jilin Province, China. In addition to supplying its MegaMax catalysts, Clariant provided technical on-site support during the successful startup of the 50,000 tons/y plant. The second phase of the project, with a capacity of 200,000 tons/y green methanol and 10,000 tons/y SAF, is expected to start production in 2027. The ceremony for the official signing of the partnership contract took place last week at the Clariant Innovation Center in Frankfurt, Germany.
