AKULON® PA6 DELIVERS PRODUCTIVITY GAINS IN OIL SUMP APPLICATIONS
DSM Engineering Plastics has announced that Akulon PA6 resin has been selected by various OEMs and Tiers for various applications and feasibility studies for oil sumps and oil pans use in under-the-hood. Currently various engine and road tests are ongoing. Final design validation of Akulon PA6 in the oil sumps and oil pans is expected for the end of 2009.

SABIC Innovative Plastics Wins a 2009 Green Dot™ Environmental Responsibility Award for Co-development of the Hyundai QarmaQ ATDV
BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands – April 2, 2009 – SABIC Innovative Plastics has been honored with a 2009 Green Dot Award™ in Transportation for its pioneering work on the Hyundai QarmaQ Advanced Technology Demonstration Vehicle (ATDV). The company won second prize in the annual award program, which recognizes the products and services of environmentally responsible organizations. SABIC Innovative Plastics, which co-developed the QarmaQ with Hyundai Motor Company, incorporated next-generation composites and thermoplastics from its broad product portfolio throughout the vehicle to reduce weight and greenhouse gas emissions. The use of these materials in glazing, interior components, the Elastic Front* pedestrian safety system, fenders and hood led to weight reductions of up to 60 kg vs. traditional materials. According to an audit by GreenOrder, an environmental strategy firm based in New York, N.Y., this means the QarmaQ would require about 80 fewer liters of diesel per year, and would cut annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 200 kg.

Lyon, France – 30 March 2009 – Rhodia and Inoplast break new ground by creating the first polyamide reinforcement beam for truck radiator grilles. This project, which has gone into production on a well-known range of trucks, is aimed at reducing costs and overall vehicle weight, without interfering with the function of this key structural element required to maintain the grille’s rigidity. Rhodia’s new-generation polyamide, Technyl Star™ AFX, proved to be the only material able to meet project specifications, thanks to its unequalled mechanical strength, combined with its exceptional fluidity.
BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands – March 25, 2009 – Polycarbonate glazing has become an important tool for automakers to differentiate their vehicles. This technology offers greater design freedom, higher performance and lighter weight than traditional glass. To create a distinctive backlight for its new compact "ix-onic" SUV concept, recently on display at the 79th Salon International de L’Automobile, Hyundai Motor Company collaborated with SABIC Innovative Plastics to take advantage of Exatec* E900 glazing featuring Lexan GLX* polycarbonate resin. SABIC Innovative Plastics, having worked side-by-side with Hyundai on several projects including the recent Hyundai QarmaQ, is committed to helping its automotive customers achieve business success. 
Advanced LED chips with increased light output, can now be used for automotive headlamps. Because of their long service life and compact size, LED lamps have become an attractive alternative to gas discharge lamps. Big advantages are the high endurance and new design possibilities. In addition, their high efficiency saves energy and and thus fuel. However, since the active chip surface is rather small, it requires adequate cooling. Fans optimized to the special needs of automotive headlamps deliver the required air flow for active cooling. In all this, high reliability and long life are indispensible for all headlamp components.
