BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands – December 8, 2008 – In order to help automotive OEMs meet key environmental challenges such as fuel economy and emission targets, high-performance Noryl GTX* resins from SABIC Innovative Plastics are moving from Ford concept vehicles into series production. The all-new Ford Kuga, Ford’s first entry into the crossover segment represents the first Ford-branded vehicle on the road with plastic fenders molded from SABIC Innovative Plastics’ lightweight, impact-resistant, and recyclable Noryl GTX resin. The Kuga also features the automaker’s first production energy absorber for pedestrian protection, molded of tough, lightweight, Xenoy* resin.

BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands – December 2, 2008 – The weight reduction and design freedom benefits from using high-performance Noryl GTX* resin in automotive fenders and other body panels have been proven in more than 12 million vehicles worldwide. Building on its many years of success using this SABIC Innovative Plastics resin, French automaker Renault has extended the technology to two of its newest models. The 2007 Twingo and 2008 Kangoo are the latest Renault vehicles to feature lightweight, durable and strong Noryl GTX resin for the fenders as an alternative to steel. This high-performance technology has enabled Renault to keep the fender weight down by as much as approximately 50 percent vs. steel, while delivering better low-speed impact durability than steel.

BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands – November 27, 2008 – Lightweight polycarbonate (PC) glazing technologies from SABIC Innovative Plastics’ Exatec* organization can offer automakers solutions that reduce weight and can assist in reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Exatec has recently introduced new testing methods that can help to optimize the application of poly-siloxane nano-composite coatings which are used in combination with Lexan* polycarbonate to enhance its ability to withstand long-term weathering in automotive environments. The correct application of these wet-coat systems is important to ensure the lightweight glazing components retain their clarity for the life of the vehicle. Using an innovative nano-indentation measurement system that can measure the mechanical properties including hardness and modulus of the coatings at different microscopic depths from the surface (as shown in the chart above), Exatec has introduced a system that relates the coating application process to the performance of the final coating. This will assist glazing manufacturers and automakers to optimize their production processes for Lexan polycarbonate glazing.

BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands – November 26, 2008 – When French automaker Renault Sport decided to create a higher-performing, limited-edition version of its turbocharged Mégane R26 – the new Mégane Renault Sport R26.R – it was time to put the vehicle on a diet. The goal was to coax higher performance from the car while still using the existing 227bhp engine from the Mégane R26 by reducing overall vehicle weight. To achieve this goal, Renault worked with tier 1 supplier, Plastrance, to select SABIC Innovative Plastics’ lightweight, high-optical quality Lexan* polycarbonate (PC) sheet and a proprietary Exatec* blackout ink technology to replace the glass backlight and quarter windows of the new vehicle. This glazing application marks the first commercial use of Exatec ink technology.
