PPG Reports its 13th Consecutive Quarterly Sales Record
(August 18, 2006 Shanghai)Recently, PPG Industries Inc., the world’s leading diversified manufacturer headquartered in Pittsburgh, reported record sales and earnings for the second quarter of fiscal year 2006. The company realized net income of USD280 million on sales revenue of USD2.8 billion for the quarter, a year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth of 21% and 6% respectively. During the quarter, in addition to the strong sales earnings growth, PPG was able to achieve higher margins of 14.5% from 14.1% despite an environment in which the chlor-alkali cycle, home building and North American auto manufacturing are approaching declines and higher raw material costs.

GE Plastics is Double Winner in SPE’s 10th Automotive Awards Program with Two Innovative Body Panel & Glazing Applications
BERGEN OP ZOOM, THE NETHERLANDS — August 8, 2006 — GE Plastics today announced it has been honored with two automotive innovation awards from the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), Central Europe. The OPEL Zafira Panoramic Roof, featuring GE’s Lexan* SLX polycarbonate (PC) film for paint replacement, won first prize in the Body Exteriors category, while the Honda Civic Extra Window with integrated spoiler, made with GE’s Lexan GLX resin, placed third in the same category. The OPEL Zafira is available in Europe and parts of Asia, while the Honda Civic is sold in Europe only. Both applications attest to the innovation and value of GE materials, which enable such advantages as improved aesthetics and performance, design flexibility, part consolidation, and elimination of secondary painting operations in automotive applications. The awards were announced on July 14 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Although polycarbonate (PC) is a favorite choice for these components, until now it has been necessary to hard-coat the resin to prevent abrasion and maintain a good surface appearance. But secondary hard coating means extra cost, additional processing time, and potential environmental impact. To help solve this challenge, GE Plastics has developed a new family of Lexan* PC resins featuring outstanding scratch resistance. Compared to standard PC, GE’s Lexan DMX resins provide improved surface hardness without the need for hard coating. These materials are excellent candidates for transparent applications such as soft keys, infrared lenses, bezels, and screens.

The new products were developed as a result of a successful two-year initiative at GE Plastics that examined the company’s manufacturing processes to redefine how its products can be made to be cleaner and more environmentally responsible than traditional materials. Valox iQ and Xenoy iQ resins are the essential elements of an environmentally progressive resin portfolio developed as part of GE’s ecomagination initiative.
French Tier 1 automotive manufacturer MGI Coutier (Champfromier) lowers costs and gains performance for engine and under-hood air ducting by specifying Arnitel® thermoplastic copolyester elastomer (TPE-E or COPE) from DSM Engineering Plastics. The diversified auto component maker uses Arnitel PB582-H, a high-performance grade, in clean and charge air ducts for a number of car makers, including Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroën.
