Specialized SABIC® PP-UMS foam resin can help reduce vehicle emissions and increase recyclability

Two diverse transportation applications – structural cores for sandwich panels in delivery vans, trucks and recreational vehicles (RVs) and blow-molded air ducts – can be made from SABIC® PP-UMS (Polypropylene – Ultra Melt Strength) foam resin.SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, is spotlighting two diverse transportation applications that demonstrate the potential benefits of SABIC® PP-UMS (Polypropylene – Ultra Melt Strength) foam resin at NPE2024 (Booth #S19005). This distinctive material features high melt strength for outstanding foamability and enables the extrusion of PP foams with very low density, excellent impact resistance and compliance with VDA 278 emissions regulations. SABIC PP-UMS foam resin’s processing versatility allows PP foams, subject to user testing, to be used in structural cores for sandwich panels in delivery vans, trucks and recreational vehicles (RVs), and to provide structural and insulative properties in blow-molded air ducts. Examples of these applications, on display at the SABIC booth, illustrate the suitability of this foam resin for broad use in transportation components that can benefit from significant weight reduction and potential cost optimization.

SABIC testing shows high potential of phase-change thermoplastics in preventing thermal runaway in EV batteries

Cylindrical battery cells arranged within a thermal runaway barrier made of SABIC’s flame retardant STAMAX™ resin with a minimum intercellular gap of 1.0 mm, before thermal runaway test.SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, is reporting here at NPE2024 test results that underline the high potential of thermoplastic-based thermal runaway barrier solutions to help prevent fire spread in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The SABIC sub-system level test series showed that a battery module box made from the company’s STAMAX™ 30YH570 long glass fiber polypropylene (PP) resin with intercellular thickness as low as 1mm has a potential to act as an effective thermal barrier solution by preventing thermal runaway propagation in 18650 cylindrical cells. It provides the necessary thermal insulation and flame resistance to reduce the chances of cell-to-cell propagation in a thermal runaway scenario and thus mitigate the risks of a catastrophic safety incident. This material in combination with compressible foams also has shown promising results to contain thermal runaway propagation in prismatic and pouch cells.

SABIC & Jessa Hospital achieve successful step towards creating circular polymers based on advanced recycling of used medical plastic

In a TRUCIRCLE™ collaboration project with Jessa Hospital, Belgium, SABIC has successfully achieved an important step towards creating circular polymers based on advanced recycling of used medical plastic.SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of recycling used medical plastic back into the medical materials stream. The project was initiated together with the dialysis department at Jessa Hospital, one of the largest non-university medical cluster in the Limburg region of Flanders, Belgium. Serving as a pilot proof-of-concept, used medical plastic generated at Jessa’s hospitals was converted to pyrolysis oil in an advanced recycling process, delivering circular feedstock for SABIC’s production of TRUCIRCLE™ polymers in medical grade quality with same performance, purity and physiological safety as virgin-based medical grade polymers. This is indispensable for medical approvals by regulators.
