Sinterama Introduces new bacteriostatic – flame retardant yarn for multiple applications

Milliken agent offers efficacy, durability

A new polyester yarn that is both flame retardant and antimicrobial, making it ideal for a variety of applications from home furnishings to automotive fabrics, has been introduced by Sinterama, a European leader in the production of synthetic yarns.

The new yarn, GUARDyarn®, contains AlphaSan® antimicrobial, a silver-based agent by Milliken & Company that inhibits the growth of microorganisms that can cause odor and fabric deterioration. GUARDyarn was created specifically for applications in the furnishings market such as upholstery for home and automotive applications as well as work wear apparel.

“We chose AlphaSan because of its many strengths, including efficacy and superior durability,” said Gianfranco Feldi, research and development manager with Sinterama. “AlphaSan performed well during the polyester production stage in terms of thermal stability, processing flexibility, ease of use and safety.”

In addition to offering excellent antimicrobial features that prevent mildew and odor, GUARDyarn contributes a high level of fire resistance. Using existing technology of sister-branded STOPFIRE® fire-retardant yarn, GUARDyarn offers resistance to fire and exhibits self-extinguishing properties which are important for home furnishing fabrics that can be found in hotels and other public environments.

AlphaSan uses advanced silver-based technology to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mildew, mold and other microorganisms that can cause odors, discoloration and deterioration of various consumer and commercial products. AlphaSan is used in a wide range of consumer goods, such as apparel and whirlpool tubs, as well as commercial applications, primarily food and beverage processing and commercial icemaking equipment.

AlphaSan is added to GUARDyarn during the extrusion process so that its antimicrobial characteristics can withstand repeated machine washings, dry cleanings or contact with normal chemical agents.

“AlphaSan’s unique ceramic carrier controls the release of silver ions over a long period of time at a level well above industry standards,” Feldi said. “AlphaSan offers an ideal combination – an antimicrobial agent that is effective, safe and of high quality. Additionally, Milliken’s support was extremely helpful in terms of technical support.”

GUARDyarn is the latest product development offered by Sinterama who also markets a variety of fine protective yarns including Bactershield® (bacteriostatic), STOPFIRE (flame retardant) and Matkò (UV protective).

Founded in 1968 in Biella, Sinterama is a European leader in the production of colored polyester yarns. It produces 35,000 tons of yarns annually in 400 different types that are used by home furnishing, automotive and apparel industries as well as a variety of other technical applications. Sinterama employs a staff of 70, including sales managers and agents, serving more than 1,600 customers in 40 countries worldwide.
