A new high-flow Stanyl® polyamide 46 (PA46) grade, 46HF4130, is now available from DSM Engineering Plastics. Designed for large or intricate components, 46HF4130 is 30% glass reinforced and heat stabilized to provide high strength at elevated temperatures. Its flow behavior is more than 160% that of standard 30% glass-filled PA46 formulations (170mm spiral flow at 1000 bar for 46HF4130 versus 100mm for conventional).

As a leading polymer distributor, technical service provider and application development partner, Distrupol is focused on the enhancement of systems that give real advantages to customers. One key, and now proven, advantage is that delivered by its telemetry based vendor managed inventory system. This telemetric system, based on the microwave measurement of polymer stock level in a customer’s silo, allows for the automatic replenishment of stock without need of human intervention.

The development of smarter and greater data-rich modules has presented the smart card industry with a range of new challenges. Chief among them is the attachment of the micro modules to the broader span of plastic substrates now being exploited by the industry. Traditionally, electronically read cards have been produced in PVC but evolution of the technology, coupled with the demand for greater durability, ever higher levels of security and enhanced aesthetics capability, has resulted in the increasing use of high tech engineering plastics that are difficult to bond and which require more sophisticated adhesive solutions.

DSM Engineering Plastics has introduced a new grade of Arnite® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). Designed for automotive gear housings, the new Arnite® grade exhibits exceptional stiffness, dimensional stability and ductility, while at the same time reducing total assembly costs and weight. This new grade of Arnite® PBT closes the performance gap between metal and plastic, thereby offering considerable advantages in weight reduction, design flexibility and assembly costs.

Small changes to machine design can yield big savings for processors. This point was underscored recently when extruder manufacturer American Maplan Corp., McPherson, Kansas, made a seemingly minor design change to the screw oil heating element installed on most of its profile machines. The new design reduces the amount of electrical power needed for each heating unit by 20%, to 7.6 watts from 9.5 watts, with no trade-off in process performance. The result, says VP Sales Kurt Waldhauer, is potentially reduced energy consumption, a 50 to 60% increase in heater life, and a decrease in machine maintenance.
