Borealis evaluates possible closure of HDPE plant in Norway

BorealisIn an extraordinary Board meeting in Borealis AS today, it was decided to inform the Borealis AS Supervisory Board in an extraordinary meeting February 13 about the ongoing evaluation of the future of the Borealis high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant in Bamble, Norway. A potential closure of the plant in 2006 is one of the options being considered.

GE, a Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Games, and the City of Torino today unveiled an Olympic-themed monument dedicated to the residents and visitors of the city for the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games. The monument is a gift from GE’s 300,000 worldwide employees to the city. Affectionately named “Il Dente del Gigante,” or the Giant’s Tooth, in honor of the famous 4,014 meter mountain peak along the border of Italy and France, the structure is eight meters high and was constructed with 550 square meters of GE’s Lexan* Margard* thermoplastic and GE lights. DSM Dyneema Achieves ISO 13485 Certification for Dyneema® Purity Fiber Operations

Dyneema® Purity, an ultra-high-molecularweight polyethylene fiber that is, weight for weight, 15 times stronger than steel, is used in high-performance medical applications such as orthopedic surgery sutures. Supplementing the ISO 9001 standard, ISO 13485 provides certification of a quality management system dedicated to medical devices.

DSM material innovation improves bobsleigh stability

The bobsleighs to be used by the Dutch Olympic Team at the Olympic Games in Turin contain special DSM vibration dampers that make the bobsleigh more stable. This reduces the risk of steering errors and means that better times can be achieved. The vibration dampers reduce the number of vibrations in the bobsleigh runners to 40% compared with the dampers traditionally used for bobsleighs.

The Bocard cover benefits from the processing economies, clarity, impact resistance and dimensional stability of Xantar.BOPLA Gehäuse Systeme GmbH (Bünde, Germany) has chosen Xantar® polycarbonate from DSM Engineering Plastics for the available clear covers of its family of Bocard plastic electronics enclosures. The clear panels of the covers are made of Xantar 22 R 01001 resin. The covers meet IEC 529 IP65 specifications, sealing out dust and minimizing ingress of low-pressure water, thanks in part to the resin’s excellent dimensional stability. In addition, the long-term clarity of Xantar allows visual monitoring of equipment housed in the Bocard enclosure, while the resin’s impact resistance helps prevent breakage and incursion by objects. Xantar meets UL-94 V2 @ 1,5 mm ratings, and the 22 R 01001 grade provides good flow and excellent mould release for ease of production.
