Solvay PPS Plants in Texas and Belgium Certified for Mass Balance Production

The new portfolio will be globally available by 2023

Brussels, September 26, 2023 - Solvay has announced that its polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) production at Borger, Texas, and its Ryton® PPS Echo compounding at Kallo-Beveren, Belgium, have obtained independent mass balance (MB1) certification under the widely recognized International Sustainability and Carbon Certification PLUS (ISCC PLUS2) scheme of accreditation.

These products offer the same technical qualities as comparable virgin PPS resins, which eliminates the need for re-validation and makes these bio-circular PPS products particularly attractive to manufacturers seeking a smooth and reliable transition to more sustainable and eco-responsible materials.

“Our mass balanced PPS grades meet with customers’ increasing efforts to reduce their scope 3 emissions3 and carbon footprint without compromising processability or end-use performance,” comments Ysée Génot, E-Mobility and Sustainability Marketing Manager.

Ryton® PPS compounds are widely used in automotive, electrical/electronics and appliances, where they meet especially high thermal and mechanical performance requirements. They have a long history of replacing metals and thermosets, reducing fuel consumption and costs while improving system integration.

Ryton® is a registered trademark of Solvay.

1 Made with renewable and/or recycled materials by using the Mass Balance (MB) accounting approach. The MB concept according to the ISCC PLUS principles has become a globally acknowledged industry standard that provides a defined set of rules for tracking and tracing the sustainability share of circular and renewable feedstock in materials and end products. As a result, users of certified materials can claim a reduced carbon footprint for their formulations based on Solvay’s life cycle assessment calculation, and brand owners can document the enhanced sustainability toward consumers.

2 ISCC PLUS provides voluntary certification of circular and bio-based products, renewables, food, feed and bio-fuels for non-regulated markets outside the framework of the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) of the European Commission. It covers raw materials and feedstock from sources such as agriculture and forestry, bio-waste, residues, renewable and recycled materials that can make a contribution to circular and bio-economy.

3 Within the framework of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), Scope 1 refers to direct emissions from in-house production processes, Scope 2 to indirect emissions from purchased energy, and Scope 3 to all other indirect emissions from upstream and downstream sources, such as material supplies, packaging and transportation.
