Omnexus demonstrates advanced e-procurement system at CeBIT 2001

Omnexus, (www.omnexus.com) the global plastics eMarketplace, was an integral feature of the IBM presentation of advanced e-procurement systems technology at CeBIT, the world’s largest high tech tradeshow, staged in Hannover 22 - 28 March.

Central to the IBM presentation, which involved the production cycle for a Miele washing machine lid, was the Omnexus e-Procurement system that enables materials search, selection, quotation acquisition, ordering and delivery specification, all to be conducted online.

Omnexus.com provides the most comprehensive marketplace in which engineers and designers can access and compare the technical data of individual resins, from the broadest range of products available from the leading plastics suppliers worldwide. Moreover, it delivers a highly efficient transactional environment within which purchasing managers are able to conduct and control the buying/supplying process with ease, speed and security.

The Omnexus e-Procurement system incorporates all the necessary tools to simplify transactional relationships between buyers and suppliers through the provision of information presented in the same format across all suppliers and materials, a single Request for Quote (RFQ) to multiple suppliers and for multiple products, and a single point of contact for order enquiries across all suppliers. In effect, Omnexus offers all the advantages to be gained from a single source of supply, with all the benefits to be obtained from global material choice.

In the IBM CeBIT presentation using the Miele example, the Omnexus demonstration showed how the Miele development engineer was able to carry out either a quick plastics material search by grade, product family or producer, or a power search based on the pre-selection of property ranges and key performance characteristics, such as rigidity, temperature resistance and impact strength, as well as processing parameters.

Through the ease of comparative analysis of the information presented, aided by a choice of metric or imperial unit measurement systems and by both ISO and ASTM data, the engineer is able to narrow the field of ‘specific fit’ materials to a small number. He then passes this information to the Miele purchasing officer who, also using the Omnexus system, is able to request quotations from each of the suppliers at the same time through a single input of basic information relating to the enquiry.

On receipt of supplier quotations, the purchasing officer makes a choice and contracts for it with the supplier. The contract is given a unique number that is then advised to the moulders/processors working on the Miele project and, through Omnexus, they are able to order material against it, specifying timing and place of delivery.

The simplicity and accuracy of the Omnexus system provides for a faster, more accurate material choice from all the leading products available globally. And, of equal importance, it offers all the advantages of a customised system within a standardised format, thereby offering the possibility to streamline the order to payment process across all supply channels to achieve greater productivity.

With the rapid pace of development in eCommerce and processing of business-to-business transactions, Omnexus provides an ideal globally accessible eMarketplace for professionals in, or doing business with, the plastics industry worldwide. Supporting its position as the industry’s leading eCommerce platform, on 19 March Omnexus launched Europe-specific service enhancements including site availability in French, German and Spanish.
