Outsourcing Sacrifices Strategy
According to Attachmate, the e-business integration solutions provider, outsourcing IT can jeopardise long-term strategic ecommerce projects.
Despite the outsourcing model's attractive cost benefits in today's climate, Jon Newlyn, Business Development Manager for Attachmate believes that some companies are cutting costs and sacrificing their e-business strategy.
With outsourcing often resulting in redundancies, the chief problem in Newlyn's opinion is that the company's IT management no longer call the shots as soon as control of e-business is handed, "lock and key", to the third-party provider.
The Gartner Group states that "It is better to have systems that are agile, rather than systems that are fast". If outsourcing is not done correctly companies will lose their agility, because they will only be as agile as the company they have outsourced to.
Newlyn says the temptation for the outsourcer to use the cheapest and most generic solution could leave their customers with outdated and less than ideal processes. These processes will be costly to take back in house or bring up to date. Profit leads all businesses.... How else will the outsourcer make his crust?
For companies considering the outsourcing model, Newlyn believes there are a
number of steps to take to ensure that handing over IT to an outsourcer is
really the right decision to make.
