CROMPTON CORPORATION AND GREAT LAKES CHEMICAL CORPORATION ANNOUNCE MERGER TO CREATE MAJOR NEW SPECIALTY CHEMICALS COMPANY
Middlebury, CT and Indianapolis, IN, March 9, 2005 –Crompton Corporation (NYSE: CK) and Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE: GLK) announced today that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement for an all-stock merger transaction, which will create the third-largest publicly traded U.S. specialty chemicals company. The new company will have combined pro forma 2004 revenues of more than $4.1 billion and a market capitalization of nearly $3.2 billion. It will hold leading positions in high-value specialty chemical niche businesses including plastics additives, petroleum additives, flame retardants and pool chemicals. Additionally, the combined company will maintain strong positions in castable urethanes and crop protection chemicals.

GREAT LAKES INCREASES PRICES OF ALL BROMINE-BASED FLAME RETARDANTS
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK) today announced it will increase prices worldwide on Firemaster® 550/552 flame retardants, Tetrabromophthalic anhydride and Tetrabromophthalic anhydride (PHT-4™) derivatives by $0.10/lb. Additionally, the company will increase prices on all other brominated flame retardants worldwide by up to 15%. These price increases are in addition to all other increases previously announced and will be effective for shipments beginning April 1, 2005, or as contracts allow.

Borealis achieves major increase in operating profit to EUR 278 million for 2004
Borealis today announced its fourth quarter results, reporting an operating profit of EUR 104 million for the quarter. The result compared positively to the EUR 24 million achieved in the same quarter of 2003, benefiting from improved operations and higher industry margins.
