GLCC LAUREL INCREASES ANTIMONY TRIOXIDE AND ANTIMONY DERIVATIVE PRICES

Great LakesINDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—GLCC Laurel, LLC today announced that it will increase prices worldwide by up to 20% for all grades of antimony trioxide, effective for shipments beginning February 1, 2005, or as contracts allow. The price for other antimony derivatives will also increase dependent upon antimony content.

GREAT LAKES CHEMICAL CORPORATION COMPLETES PHASE-OUT OF TWO FLAME RETARDANTS

Great LakesINDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK) today confirmed that it voluntarily stopped production of penta- and octa- polybrominated diphenyl ether on December 31, 2004. The move, first announced by the company in November 2003, comes years ahead of legislative mandates and is a direct result of the company’s development of an alternative flame retardant called Firemaster® 550. An assessment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that the alternative flame retardant has a favorable environmental profile compared to penta-BDE. Customers have readily embraced Firemaster® 550 in the marketplace as the only penta-BDE alternative that simultaneously meets performance, fire-safety, and environmental standards.

Brenntag goes offshore with yellow rated N-SPEC® 50 pipeline and system cleaning chemical

Compared to other dispersants/solvents like xylene, diesel and toluene, N-Spec® 50 is a preferred alternative thanks to the better environmental properties. N-Spec® 50, a dispersant /solvent developed by Brenntag Oil & Gas, has recently been tested in Scandinavia for aquatic toxicity, biodegradation and bioaccumulation in marine environments. These tests are universally accepted in the North Sea countries and are recommended by the Ospar guidelines. Based on this test data N-Spec® 50 is classified in Norway as yellow, which means that it is an acceptable chemical for use offshore (rating: green and yellow are accepted, red is to be replaced after a certain period of time and black is not allowed). Compared to other dispersants/solvents like xylene, diesel and toluene, N-Spec® 50 is a preferred alternative thanks to the better environmental properties.
