Clariant’s Exolit® OP 560 confirmed as safer flame retardant for PU foam
Muttenz, October 3, 2014 – Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, confirms good news for the upholstery industry and other sectors looking for safer, environmentally more compatible flame retardants that meet internationally accepted flammability standards3 for flexible polyurethane foam. In its draft Alternatives Assessment report1 on flame retardants in flexible foam released in June2, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified Clariant’s oligomeric phosphonate polyol (OPP) flame retardant - marketed under the trade name Exolit® OP 560 – as a safer alternative to pentabromo diphenylether (pentaBDE), traditionally used for giving fire protection to foam.

DSM inaugurates Solar Technologies Demonstration Center in India
Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences Company, today inaugurated its Solar Technologies Demonstration Center at its DSM Engineering Plastics facility in Pune, India. This state-of-the-art solar technology center has been built to demonstrate and showcase the performance of DSM's innovations in solar technology and will also reduce the plant's CO2 footprint by using the renewable energy generated by the solar plant to meet 25% of the site's electricity needs.

Clariant übernimmt VitaPac, einen chinesischen Verpackungsspezialisten im Healthcare-Bereich
Muttenz, 29. September 2014 – Clariant, ein weltweit führendes Unternehmen für Spezialchemikalien, gab heute die Unterzeichnung des Kaufvertrages mit VitaPac, einem chinesischen Gesundheitsverpackungsspezialisten, bekannt. Das inhabergeführte Unternehmen mit 80 Mitarbeitern hat seinen Sitz in Hongkong und eine Produktionsstätte im chinesischen Dongguan. Im Jahr 2013 erzielte es einen Konzernumsatz von 4 Mio. CHF. Der Abschluss der Transaktion wird - vorbehaltlich der Genehmigung der Aufsichtsbehörden - zum Ende des vierten Quartals 2014 erwartet.

INNOVATIVE TRAWLS MADE FROM DYNEEMA® HELP TO REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF PELAGIC FISHING
The Netherlands, 23 September 2014 - Fishing Company Cornelis Vrolijk, based in IJmuiden, The Netherlands, and its subsidiary Jaczon, based in Scheveningen, The Netherlands, are specialized in pelagic fishing. The fishing trawls on board of their trawlers, which are used for catching pelagic (schooling) species, are traditionally made of nylon. Cornelis Vrolijk and Jaczon are now replacing their nylon trawls by trawls made from DSM’s light and exceptionally strong UHMwPE (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) fiber, branded as Dyneema®.
