Mondi and Biedronka strengthen partnership by launching Recyklobox – unique solution for deposit scheme
- Mondi and Biedronka launched Recyklobox nationwide to support new deposit system in Poland.
- Innovative container made from a durable five-layer corrugated board with 80% recycled material.
- Cost-efficient, made from renewable resources and enabling fast implementation across many retail stores. This unique, previously unused solution enabled Biedronka to collect over 29 million returnable bottles by the end of March, even before automated reverse vending machines were installed in stores.
27 April 2026 – Mondi, a global player in sustainable packaging and paper, and Biedronka, one of Poland’s largest supermarket chains, have jointly developed an innovative solution supporting the new deposit system: Recyklobox.
What is Recyklobox?
Recyklobox is a specially designed container for collecting returnable packaging covered by the deposit system. It is made from five-layer corrugated board, ensuring durability and stability. The structure consists of two main components: the lower section, where bottles fall in, and the lid, which features a corrugated attachment enabling the installation of a scanner as well as an opening for inserting bottles.
The corrugated board used in the production of Recyklobox is made from a mix of 80% recycled paper and 20% virgin fibre. Thanks to the use of recycled materials and the possibility of reprocessing them at the end of the product’s lifecycle, Recyklobox aligns with both companies’ sustainability goals.
“At Mondi, our ambition is to create solutions that go beyond packaging, as we understand the real impact these have on how modern retail operates. By developing Recyklobox together with Biedronka, we have combined functionality, environmental responsibility and rapid implementation. We are pleased that together we have created an innovation that effectively responds to specific market needs,” says Mateusz Buchowiecki, National Key Account Manager at Mondi.
Simple implementation, cost-efficient and eco-friendly
Recyklobox stands out for its simple logistics and ease of assembly, enabling swift deployment across many retail locations. Compared with traditional machines used within the deposit system, it is a significantly more cost-effective solution while delivering the same functionality. This unique solution enabled Biedronka to collect 29,152,902 returnable bottles by the end of March, ahead of installing traditional machines across all stores.
“Recyklobox is an example of how innovation can go hand in hand with responsibility. In our cooperation with Mondi, we chose a solution that allows us to respond quickly and efficiently to the new legal requirements while supporting the use of sustainable materials,” emphasises Katarzyna Garbarska, Jeronimo Martins Polska.
This is not the first joint initiative of the two companies. Previously, Mondi and Biedronka successfully implemented a closed-loop programme, demonstrating that cost efficiency, functionality and care for the environment can go hand in hand. The new project marks another step towards building a more sustainable retail model in Poland. Thanks to the synergy between Mondi’s experience in designing innovative solutions and Biedronka’s operational scale, it has been possible to develop a solution that not only meets legal requirements but also genuinely supports consumers in their everyday efforts to protect the environment.
