Mondi introduces white digital printing for corrugated packaging, unlocking new branding possibilities

  • Mondi is one of the first companies to offer white digital printing options, opening up new possibilities for brand identity and recognition at the point of sale.
  • The white ink is water-based and suitable for primary and secondary packaging.
  • Mondi's high-performance digital printing is customisable and supports sustainable packaging solutions without the need for printing plates or clichés.

17 September 2025 – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable paper and packaging, has expanded its six-colour digital printing range for corrugated packaging to include white ink. This innovation reflects the growing trend of white digital printing on brown packaging. It enables vivid, high-contrast designs that enhance brand recognition and support sustainable, resource-efficient solutions, harnessing the flexibility of this innovative technology.

Digitally printed white – new possibilities for brown corrugated packaging

The new white digital printing option is more than just an additional colour. A white underprint gives colours, logos and motifs the same stand-out contrast on brown corrugated board as they do on a white substrate – a decisive factor for brand identity and visibility at the point of sale.

Halftone printing is also available, which enables smooth gradients, differentiated shading, and chamfers that create three-dimensional image effects. This results in brilliant, high-contrast print images and new possibilities for distinctive, high-quality branding and packaging designs.

Digital printing at Mondi – sustainable, flexible and efficient

High-performance digital printing is one of the most flexible and sustainable printing processes available today. It combines high production speeds with high-quality, multicolour print images – on both white and brown outer layers as well as on open flutes.

All inks used are water-based, tested and approved for use on primary packaging by Swiss Quality Testing Services (SQTS), an independent, internationally recognised laboratory for food safety testing. With data-to-print technology, printing plates or clichés are no longer needed, which reduces set-up and production times and allows new designs to be introduced quickly and adapted at short notice.

Digital printing – now including the white option – offers advantages beyond those of flexographic or offset printing. A key benefit is the ability to print sequential barcodes, EAN codes and QR codes directly onto the packaging. This eliminates the need for separate labels, saving costs, time and resources, while also reducing potential scanning errors.

Medium and large quantities of the same design can also be printed with variations in a single run, for example for seasonal, regional or event-related campaigns. Thanks to optimised quantity splitting, only the required amount is produced per print image, reducing storage costs and preventing surpluses.

Supporting diverse industries

With these advantages, digital printing is suited to a wide range of sectors, including eCommerce, food and beverages and other fast-moving consumer goods. The introduction of white further strengthens Mondi’s position as an innovator in sustainable packaging and marks an important milestone for the industry.
