Bringing Distinctive Style to Medical Devices While Ensuring Safety, Regulatory Compliance

Computer modeling services in Clariant ColorWorks™ allowed a medical device manufacturer to easily evaluate different color schemes. Pictured are blue pearlescent and purple pearlescent options and the translucent purple finally chosen for the device. (Photographs: Clariant)In today’s competitive marketplace manufacturers must try to differentiate their product from others by improving functionality and design. Use of drug delivery devices increasingly occurs outside of a hospital setting and since it is the patient rather than a doctor who is the user, the device must be attractive as well as convenient and functional. They become more like any other consumer product. That’s why color and other visual elements are increasingly important in device design.

 Economic, technological, political and philosophical changes drive color preferences

So will soft, muted, earthy and organic tones that convey introspection, stability and personal responsibility. If these two trends seem at odds, that may be because confusion and contradiction is also an important element in some of the major societal trends identified in the latest edition of ColorForward™. This trend analysis and color design tool from Clariant Masterbatches is released annually to help plastic product designers and marketing professionals make more informed color choices.
