The “open standard” is a myth, claims Attachmate
According to Attachmate, the enterprise application integration solutions provider, open standards do little to help businesses. Rather than having freedom of choice, for the majority of companies, open standards mean being indefinitely locked in to a vendor’s own software.
Jon Newlyn, Business Development Manager at Attachmate believes that the whole notion of an open standard has now become another IT myth. “Instead of using a standard to promote universality across the software divide, vendors with the strongest financial power hijack standards and then develop applications to ensure that companies can’t benefit from them unless they buy the latest version of their software.”
Citing a number of the industry’s largest IT companies, Newlyn also believes that sooner or later the “vendor standard” will impact on the e-business arena. “In the future companies will be faced with severe integration difficulties, unable to integrate best of breed systems and handcuffed to one vendor and it will cost companies millions of Euro in system re-development.”
