Syensqo expands its portfolio of certified circular specialty materials

Growing customer demand for circular specialty materials drives the new certification of Fomblin® Y and increase of fluorine recovery

Brussels, October 8, 2026 - Syensqo, a leading global provider of high-performance materials and chemical solutions, is expanding its portfolio of circular high-performance fluids with the successful UL Environmental Claim Validation to Fomblin® Y. The new verification under UL 2809 responds to growing customer demand for circular solutions, supports the transition to more resource-efficient industrial practices, and aligns with the objectives of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) to strengthen Europe’s resilience by increasing the circular use of strategic raw materials.

Building on the UL Environmental Claim Validation obtained in 2025 for selected high-performance elastomers and lubricant fluids, Syensqo has further expanded its certified circular portfolio, with the addition of Fomblin® Y in September 2026. Around 40%[1] of the fluorine content allocated to these newly certified products through a mass balance accounting approach comes from post-industrial recycled (PIR) hydrofluoric acid (HF).

Fluorspar, the primary mineral source of fluorine, is recognized as a critical raw material under the European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). By recovering fluorine from post-industrial waste, Syensqo is contributing to the CRMA's broader objectives of reducing critical raw material dependencies and strengthening the resilience of European value chains.

To support growing customer demand for circular high-performance fluorinated elastomers and fluids across multiple industries, Syensqo is also investing at its Spinetta Marengo manufacturing site in Italy to enhance its recycling capabilities and increase the recovery of fluorine. The investment will strengthen the availability of recycled raw materials for Syensqo's specialty polymers portfolio.

"Our customers are increasingly looking for high-performance materials that enable them to use resources more efficiently while strengthening the resilience of their supply chains," said Tom Wood, Vice President, Head of Product and Asset Management at Syensqo. "The expansion of our certified Fomblin® portfolio, together with our investment in recycled fluorine recovery at Spinetta Marengo, demonstrates how we are responding to this demand at an industrial scale. By recovering and reusing fluorine locally, we can reduce reliance on virgin resources while helping build a more circular and resilient European fluorine value chain."

The expanded UL validation for Fomblin® Y, together with the investment at Spinetta Marengo, demonstrates Syensqo's continued progress in developing circular solutions for fluorinated materials, helping customers increase the use of recycled raw materials without compromising the performance and reliability required in demanding industrial applications.

[1] Syensqo's Fomblin® Y products are fully fluorinated synthetic polymers consisting only of carbon (C), oxygen (O), and fluorine (F) atoms. Fluorine atoms account for >65%wt of the total polymer mass. Syensqo is using a mass balance system to allocate 40%wt of recycled fluorine to the total fluorine in the molecule. As a result, the final molecule has been allocated 25%wt recycled content through the mass balance system.
