An extensive evaluation by FCI, a major automotive electrical/electronic connector maker, of materials for a new series of flexible harness connectors resulted in the specification of Arnite® T06 202, an unfilled polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) from DSM Engineering Plastics. Arnite T06 202 provided the needed balance of toughness, cycle time, flow, and thermal stability, and was selected after testing of more than nine alternatives from DSM and its competitors. On average, cycle time was 10 percent less with Arnite than the alternative materials, while flow was 10 percent better.

NEW GRADES FROM DSM ENGINEERING PLASTICS COMBINE CLASS A SURFACE WITH TOP AESTHETICS AND DURABILITY

Two new DSM Engineering Plastics grades are available for automotive headlamps. Originally designed for the 2003 model Audi A3, Arnite TV4 220 polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and Xantar RX 1045 polycarbonate (PC) resins are designed to produce class A surfaces. Both exhibit freedom from outgassing that can dim or discolour headlamps over time. New Xantar and Arnite grades can be directly metallised, requiring no additional painting or finishing, offering designers of automotive parts an ideal combination of material properties for a consistent, unified appearance.
In close collaboration with Automotive Lighting GmbH and Coko Werke, DSM Engineering Plastics developed two materials for use in and around the headlamp of the 2003 model Audi A3. In developing the styling for this headlamp, Audi decided to specify the use of plastic parts where the appearance does not need to be enhanced by after treatments like painting or chrome plating. The biggest challenge was, therefore, to achieve an exact color match of the metallic gray in two adjacent parts made from intrinsically different polymers.

Oystertec plc uses Stanyl® TW200f8 for the locking parts of new automotive high-pressure quick-connect

Oystertec Plc (York, UK) is using DSM Engineering Plastics STANYL® TW200F8 40% glass-reinforced, heat-stabilized polyamide (PA) for the retaining ring and locking collar (black components above) of its line of low- and high-pressure quick-connects for automobiles and industrial applications. STANYL® TW200F8 was selected for its high-temperature properties, low creep, high strength, flexibility, good chemical resistance and ease of processing. SIEMENS VDO GAINS FROM DSM’S STANYL® FOR AUTOMOTIVE SENSOR HOUSINGS

Siemens VDO makes a number of automotive sensor housings from DSM Engineering Plastics Stanyl® TW200F6 polyamide 46 (PA46) with 30-percent glass reinforcement. The material offers oil and temperature resistance, strength, and sealing for Siemens VDO components, including the oil-level sensor for Vectra car models from Adam Opel AG shown here. Automotive sensor housings made of DSM Engineering Plastics Stanyl® TW200F6, a polyamide 46 (PA46) with 30-percent glass reinforcement, provide oil and temperature resistance, strength, and sealing for Siemens VDO components, including oil-level sensors for Vectra car models from Adam Opel AG. Better melt flow and mechanical properties compared with PA66 allow Stanyl TW200F6 to flow around sensor elements and inserts for better sealing and encapsulation, improved surface quality, and longer product life. The superior melt flow additionally lessens the potential for damage to sensor elements and wires as it reduces injection moulding cycle times and tooling wear.
