GMT AND GMTexTM FROM QUADRANT PLASTIC COMPOSITES FORGE NEW AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS, INCREASING MARKET POTENTIAL

A novel concept for manufacturing instrument panel mountings using GMT is being implemented in a number of Ford Group models: the Volvo S40 and V50, the Mazda 3 and the Ford C-Max. A high degree of functional integration, including the vehicle cross member which is pressed in at the same time in the form of a thin-walled steel tube - also enabled considerable weight savings to be achieved in this case compared with conventional approaches, at no additional cost. LENZBURG, SWITZERLAND – K 2004 – Glass mat thermoplastics (GMT) are used in the automotive industry for manufacturing semi-structural and structural components which have to satisfy the highest crash safety standards for the protection of passengers and pedestrians. GMT’s high impact resistance, good fatigue and low creep characteristics have forged new applications where manufacturers need to meet cost targets and add function integration to their products. As the world’s leading GMT manufacturer, Quadrant Plastic Composites cooperates closely with the automotive industry and system suppliers in developing new component concepts for future generations of vehicles.

PROVIDING INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FROM FLUOROPLASTICS

The high pressure dual laminate absorption column withstands pressures between -1.0 bar (-14.7 psig) of vacuum and 3.1 bar (45 psig) of internal pressure. LENZBURG, SWITZERLAND – K 2004 – Fluoroplastics are well known under the Teflon brand name and most people are familiar with it as giving non-sticky properties in pans for household use. However, what many people do not know is that fluoroplastics find a much wider use in many industrial and non-industrial applications, having remarkable temperature, purity, high chemical and corrosion resistance properties that provide high performing, cost-efficient solutions for applications in industries like semiconductors, chemical processing, environmental and energy management or oil exploration. Under the SYMALIT brand name, Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products offers a number of fluoroplastics including plain sheets, fabric backed lining sheets, films, rods, and other forms made of materials such as PVDF, ECTFE, ETFE, FEP, MFA or PFA, all of which are fluoroplastics with distinctive performance qualities.

SymaLITE COMPOSITES OFFER LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS

The entire underfloor structure of the new BMW 5 and 6 Series models is encased in four SymaLITE modules. This considerably improves the vehicle's aerodynamics and thus reduces driving noise and fuel consumption. The new SymaLITE material concept also enabled weight savings of approx. 30 % to be achieved compared with conventional underfloor structures. The enclosed underfloor structure makes the use of PVC anti-corrosion protection unnecessary. The highly respected Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE) presented this material innovation with the «Plastics Industry Oscar» - the SPE Award for 2003. LENZBURG, SWITZERLAND – K 2004 – It has been a banner year for Quadrant Plastic Composites’ SymaLITE products. Since the lightweight composite’s commercial launch just over a year ago, it has earned the prestigious Innovation Award in 2003 for new plastics applications from the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), and it has also delivered concrete solutions to several automotive designs.
