GREAT LAKES CHEMICAL CORPORATION COMPLETES PHASE-OUT OF TWO FLAME RETARDANTS

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK) today confirmed that it voluntarily stopped production of penta- and octa- polybrominated diphenyl ether on December 31, 2004. The move, first announced by the company in November 2003, comes years ahead of legislative mandates and is a direct result of the company’s development of an alternative flame retardant called Firemaster® 550. An assessment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that the alternative flame retardant has a favorable environmental profile compared to penta-BDE. Customers have readily embraced Firemaster® 550 in the marketplace as the only penta-BDE alternative that simultaneously meets performance, fire-safety, and environmental standards.

GREAT LAKES INCREASES PRICE FOR KP-140 SPECIALTY ADDITIVE

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK) today announced a worldwide price increase of 18 percent where contracts allow of its KP-140® specialty additive. The increase takes effect with all shipments from January 10, 2005, or as contracts allow. This price increase is necessary to keep pace with escalating global raw material and energy costs.

GREAT LAKES INCREASES PRICES OF ALL BROMINE AND PHOSPHORUS-BASED FLAME RETARDANTS

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA—Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE:GLK) today announced it will increase prices worldwide by 20 percent for all bromine-based flame retardants and by USD 0.35/kg for all phosphorus-based flame retardants within its Polymer Additives division, effective for shipments beginning January 1, 2005, or as contracts allow. These price increases are in addition to all other increases previously announced.
