Celebrating 50 years of flame retardants: Exolit AP leads the way to a more sustainable future

Clariant’s intumescent coatings foam and expand when exposed to high heat, forming an insulating char that protects the underlying material.
© Clariant In 2025, Clariant is proud to celebrate a significant milestone: 50 years of Exolit AP flame retardants protecting lives and property around the world. Based on advanced ammonium polyphosphate (APP) technology, these pioneering flame retardants have become the industry benchmark in a wide range of applications, including intumescent coatings, fire barrier sealing systems, thermoset composites for e-mobility battery housings and coatings, rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation foams and more. As Clariant marks this golden anniversary, it is not just celebrating past achievements but actively shaping the future of fire protection.

© ClariantClariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemical company, today announced that its catalysts had enabled significantly higher emission reductions in 2025 compared to the previous year. Avoided greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 45 million tons of CO2e, 5 million tons higher than in 2024. The emission reductions were made possible by the company's innovative technologies, such as reforming catalysts for producing direct reduced iron (DRI) and nitrous oxide abatement catalysts for nitric acid plants, as well as syngas catalysts for producing green methanol either through electrolytic hydrogen from renewable electricity or from bio-feedstocks. Additionally, Clariant's catalysts for refinery off-gas purification contributed to these avoided emissions, helping refineries and crude-to-chemical complexes reduce their environmental footprint. The DRI process, as one example, has only half of the CO2 intensity compared to conventional steel production.

SABIC launches ULTEM reactive oligomer for tough, lightweight aerospace composites

ULTEM™ SU3102P reactive oligomer, a Gold winner of the 2026 Edison Awards. (SABIC)SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, today introduced ULTEM™ SU3102P reactive oligomer, a novel toughening agent for thermoset composites used in primary and secondary aerospace structures such as wings, fuselage frames, spoilers and interior components. This new polyetherimide (PEI) oligomer delivers unmatched thermoset formulation freedom without impacting processability. ULTEM SU3102P oligomer, a Gold winner of the 2026 Edison Awards, supports development of advanced aerospace structures with superior performance compared to incumbent materials.
